Silvina Bongiovanni

Yes, that is me as a can-can dancer. We all need a little more dance in our lives.

I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I completed my undergraduate degree in Letras at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (Facultad de FilosofĂa y Letras). I showed up on my first day ready to study literature, but after just one linguistics class, the rest was history.

I earned a dual-PhD in Linguistics and Hispanic Linguistics from Indiana University, under the supervision of Kenneth de Jong and Erik W. Willis. My main area of research is experimental phonology: I study the phonetic underpinnings of phonological variation, with a focus on Spanish. I have also published work in sociolinguistics and second language acquisition.

I am currently Associate Professor of Spanish, in the Department of Romance and Classical Studies at Michigan State University. I am also adjunct faculty in Linguistics, core faculty in the Center of Latin American Studies and affiliated faculty in Second Language Studies and Digital Humanities. So many links! But now you know: cool people all around me!
