My paper with former student Maddie Hannon, “Perception of the assibilated trill in Argentine Spanish”, is out! This paper is a chapter in Greg Thompson and Scott Alvord’s edited volume Bridging Boundaries: Interdisciplinary perspectives on Hispanic Linguistics.
Our chapter examines whether an Argentine regional variant of /r/, [ɹ̌], is perceptually confusable with the postalveolar fricative allophones of /ʝ/, [ʃ], and [ʒ], and to examine the degree to which the factors of regional origin and dialect contact affect the perception of these phones. This was a fun paper to work on, not only because it’s Argentine Spanish but also because I got to collaborate with one of my students. A learning experience for both of us and I hope we get to repeat it.
